Hemant, from FriendlyAtheist.com, asked a great question:
I took a second to give my quick response:
I admire any Christian who is truly “going for it” with everything he/she has in ‘em.
You’ve discarded the rules of “How to be a Christian (part 2).” You’ve put aside the “Christian” facade. You’ve decided that you’re gonna face the growing world of doubt and skepticism head-on. It’s not an easy journey, I can relate. Truthfully, it’s typically pretty darn tough! Often times you secretly might want to give up…but you can’t. Something is different inside of you. The world laughs at you. People might think you’ve gone off the deep end. But no matter how silly you might look, you’ve committed to stay on board this crazy train called Christianity.
So, to you who is “going for it,” I salute you.

This makes me think of Gandhi’s quote: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” So I have to agree that I admire anyone who lives a life filled with love, understanding and charity above anyone who just tells me that I should.
I second what Hover said. Well put.
Ken Miller, seebs, WishboneDawn, Bill (at the very least for the thick skin), Mike Clawson, Frebble, Texas Lynn, some of my Christian relatives, Barack Obama, Dennis Kucinich, Stephanie Sanger, Christopher Hedges, and a whole bunch of others whose names escape me. (If you haven’t figured it out, some of the names are screen names from various forums.)
How about some living atheists / naturalists / agnostics / humanists / freethinkers that Christians admire?
@Ben…
The first week that FC opened I asked Hemant for a few pointers. One of the first that he made was that I’ll eventually develop thick skin.
I guess “eventually” has come, although I secretly am still very much a softy. :-$
Christians I admire: Jesus, Mike Clawson, Kenneth Miller, Bishop Harries, Bill Cecchini, and some friends of mine
atheists/skeptics I admire: Hemant Mehta, Ayaan Hirshi Ali (just finished her book), Robert Price, Micheal Shermer, Margaret Downey, Greg Epstein, Carl Sagan. and I admire Dawkins, Harris, Dennett and Hitchens for having the guts to speak up, even though I don’t agree with everything they say. Dennet is my favorite, and I have to admit I admire Hitchens’ honesty even when I disagree with him. I’m glad Dawkins has addresses the war on science, and I’m glad Harris has spoken up about Islam, which is too often ignored.
Christians: Those who are happy with theyre life and religion, dont target certain people or religions and actaully live what they preach and respect everyone
Atheists: Those who are happy with theyre life, dont target out certain people or religions and actaully live what they teach and respect everyone
I can see it now, the next question is: What other-than-christian individuals to you admire? I gotta say, Ghandi and Budha. Even if Ghandi was a little over the top and Budha isnt technically real.
Jared, FYI ‘buddha’ is a title meaning ‘awakened one’, and the first guy given that title (i.e. the original buddha, founder of buddhism) was named Siddhattha Gotama/Siddhartha Gautama who apparently lived sometime around 566-410/486 BCE. so he might’ve been ‘technically real’, and certainly later, well documented ‘buddhas’ have been. they don’t claim to be divine entities, if that’s what you were getting at…?
