Christianity - He did. It is done.
Religion - I do. My works earn God’s favor.
Find peace in the fact that God loves you as you are, not as you think you should be. Meditate on this.
We can try, try, and try, but all we’re doing is unnecessarily tiring ourselves out.Â
God will not love you more when you:
- Read your bible more
- Pray more
- Stop [fill in the sin here]
- Start [enter religious act here]
He loves you as you are. Put religion aside.
You will NEVER catch your tail.

Does that go for atheists too?
Aww puppy! Good choice in dog
yeah, does it go for atheist too? Because, then Pascals wager suddenly goes in our direction
Drakim, I’d never use Pascal’s wager to support atheism. It’s far too weak an argument.
Actually Bill, assuming there is a God for a moment, if it is not possible to be loved more is it possible to be loved less? Can we perform any actions that would negate the great love that God feels for his creations? I’m not asking for proof, just your opinion.
You see I see a problem either way. If his love can be diminished through bad actions then surely your actions can reverse that. If it cannot be diminished then where is the moral imperative to perform good actions. It puts you in exactly the same position as my good atheistic self in that my actions are only good or bad as I (and society) decide them.
Cute puppy though.
Hey guys,
I believe that this applies to everybody! God loves you. Period.
He loves you so much that he gave up his son. Accepting this gift of mercy and grace (through Jesus) frees us all from the stresses and bondage of religion.
No. I don’t believe that we can.
I don’t have a good answer. I wish I did.
There’s something inside of me that just makes me want to serve and please God. I want to honor him with everything that I have and everything that I am.
I understand how silly that must sound. I used to laugh when Christians would say stuff like that. I also know that many atheists look at this type of mentality like I’m just some Christian dude who is always walking egg shells and what not.
The truth is, life is great. It’s an honor to “walk on egg shells.”
I like this post. The gospel message is preached in simplicity, but it still packs a powerful punch and we get the realization that we have a Savior that’s done everything for us.
Unfortunately, one can reject the love of God.
Also, this makes clear the importance of evangelism. The love of God is not made clear through the actions of believers, but through the grace of God shown through the life of Jesus. While it’s God’s job to create faith, Christians have the opportunity to explain what such faith entails in the best possible way so if God’s love is rejected it is through no fault of our own. We can only plant the seed of faith - still it’s a vitally important job.
The carrot or the stick concepts to why one should do good works are only secondary. Yes, I’ll be happy to avoid hell. Yes, I’ll be even happier to be with God in heaven. But in reality such things don’t even earn get us close to earning salvation - only Jesus can do that.
What it really comes down to is that “we love because he first loved us.” Love isn’t an obligation. For the Christian, it’s an honor.
hoverFrog: It was a joke, m’kay?
I mean, it’s not like I can avoid pointing out the flaws of pascal wager on a daily basis to diffrent debaters. So trust me, I know.
I like this. We really need to be told this again and again. I know I personally struggle with this. When people are constantly telling me to fast at this time or read everyday, it kind of takes away the intimacy and thrill of reading the Bible and finding out something new about Jesus. I sometimes can get on these for a couple days and then dwell on it and I’ll tell a friend what I learned and to me it is the greatest gift God has given us. But the whole point is I struggle with people telling me and God telling me. Maybe they want/need to read everyday or fast etc. I want God to place the desire on my heart, soul, body and mind to do it.
Drakim, I know. I was just getting into the spirit of the whole “slate Pascal’s Wager” thing.
Bill, I’d only say that it was silly if you locked yourself away in a monastery or something. That’s not serving anybody but yourself. As long as serving God is the same as serving God’s creation, is the same as serving the world, etc then you will get my support for your actions. Not some of your views but actions always speak louder than words.
I’ve said it many times before and, at the risk of getting boring with endless repetition, I’ll say it again: If your belief gives you added impetus to help others then it is good that you have it. Even if you don’t think that it makes a difference to your god.
