Truth be told, I spend a decent amount of time on this site. I enjoy upgrading, adding new features, improving up existing features, etc. I’m always trying to think of creative ways to draw in new readers.
In my opinion, our goal, though, needs to be to stick to what we do and not sacrifice anything just for the sake of increasing our numbers.
I’ve thought long and hard (no pun intended - you’ll see) about posting this blog. It’s racy…I’m fine with that. It might be pushing it a bit - again, fine with that. We’re all big boys and girls, right? K, here we go.
Here’s the simple fact: from a marketing perspective, the porn industry has it figured out, wouldn’t you agree? They make a few billion a year…no big deal, huh? I heard a statistic that the [tag]porn [/tag]industry will annually bring in more profit that the [tag]MLB[/tag], [tag]NFL[/tag], [tag]MLB[/tag], and [tag]NBA [/tag]COMBINED!! That’s a lot of smut and a lot of dollas!!
How do they do it? How do they continue to be so successful? What principles/methodologies do they subscribe to that we could use to promote our product? Don’t lie - there are plenty!
From a marketing perspective, what could your/my website learn from the porn industry?
If using the porn industry as an example offends you, try this:
There’s a trick, though. Don’t forget this: “Our goal, though, needs to be to stick to what we do and not sacrifice anything just for the sake of increasing our numbers.”

Hi Bill,
A couple of things about the porn industry that has made successful: product and technology.
The Porn Industry has been very good at using new technologies to disseminate their product. Video cassettes, DVDs, Internet, Cable, etc.
Second, the porn industry sells a product that people really, really want! People are hardwired to need sexual pleasure, the Adult Industry has found an extremely profitable way to piggy back on this.
As far as advertising goes I think it’s effect is probably negligble.
I agree with Travis. I’m willing to bet that porn needs little to no marketing.
I pretty sure it was Ben Franklin that said, “Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death, taxes and porn”. I may be paraphrasing :d
You know that your google ads are going to reflect you post don’t you?
On t’Internet you have to think swamping. Really swamp the audience with different flavours of what they want. One audience member may want *ahem* natural features. Another may want *erm* lots of detail. Yet another may want a veritable orgy of information *ooh err*.
So, if your readers want debate then give us debating options. If we want friendly banter then provide a means to mediate arguments so they don’t get out of hand. If we want busty lesbian nymphos then …no wait…that’s not what we come here for. Above all don’t forget the thing that keeps us coming back day after day and week after week.
You know what I’m talking about…FREE CAKE and a friendly place to visit.
Porn fulfills a basic human desire, and goes from there — from the fairly mainstream to the darker and uglier recesses of the human psyche.
Plus, the illicit nature of viewing porn, especially the more bizarre stuff, adds to the addictive nature.
Porn delivers what it promises — cheap, easy sexual fixes.
& hoverfrog - fortunately I think Google doesn’t accept Adwords for porn.
Powerful visual stimulation - more “hero shots” to grab attention, and may capture the essence of your post. I’ve noticed more images on here & I like it.
Sorry bro, but I haven’t figured out the hover link issue yet. Checked w/ a few people and fiddled, with no luck. I’ll keep looking.
You’re doing well on most of the rest - the marketing is very porn-like. :”>
@Matt, phew. There’s somethign I didn’t know.
