Today Perry Noble wrote a blog titled “What Do You Do To Relax?”
Following suit, I’ll quickly mention a few things that I do. The rest is up to you guys
- Watch sports. Yes, it’s true - I’m hooked. Football is my fav to watch. I’ll watch it all, though. Basketball, baseball (if I’m really bored), golf, tennis, soccer, you name it.
- I’ve been trying to get into reading more. My entire life, literally, I’ve hated reading. I’ve found a genre of books that are able to keep my attention, so I’ve been trying to “learn me so good edumacation.”
- Spend time with Tiffany. I’ve borrowed this idea from Perry…Thursday night, every week, is date night for Tiff and I! It rocks. Other than that, we love doing relaxing things such as watching tv (Lost, The Office, comedic series), going on drives, and going out to eat.
- Playing with my doggies! I love ‘em. I have a puggle (pug/beagle mix) named Apple and a Boston Terrier puppy named Jack. Get it? Apple Jack. Laugh - it’s funny.
- Hookin’ up with a little bit of Madden on the Wii. My brother and I typically play together. He’s a MLB and I’m a ROLB.
- Napping. Although my naps, as seldom as they are, are typically 3-5 hours so I’m not sure that’s considered a nap. Maybe it’s just going to sleep. I dunno - haha.
Here’s the fun part - how about you guys? What do you do to relax??
Anybody catch the Frankie Goes To Hollywood joke? Come on…I know there are other 80’s music fans out there…

Questions
I get so little time to relax having four kids.
When I do find an hour to relax usually once the kids are in bed…. I read.
On the weekends my wife and I are trying to perfect a new recipe.
Last weekend we attempted and nailed a really good gnocchi recipe! this had been something i had tried in the past and failed miserably at!
But we ‘owned’ it this past Sunday!
Damn we are good!

@Robert…
You’ve gotta be kidding me?!?! Gnocchis are one of my favorite foods ever!! My grandparents (from Italy) made them for us all the time.
Bill said:
My Nonni, she also came from Italy, Tuscany to be exact.
She was the master of gnocchi… she made them by the the hundreds. i can still remember her in her apron in front of that table floured hands rolling out ropes of dough and slicing them.
She got too old to do that anymore when I was in my teens and by the time i was interested in replicating her recipes, her mind was gone.
(One of the my many reasons for disbelief in a personal god that acts in the world)
Anyway I tried so many times to duplicate the recipe to no avail. Sometimes they were as dense as super balls some times they’d disintegrate in the water.
Finally, last week my wife and i got this book where they outline all the pitfalls and what to do and what not to do and Perfecto!!!!
Little delicate pillows of potato-ey bliss in a zesty tomato pancetta sauce!
Oh the glory of Italian Food done well!

1.Long walks at the beach or park. I walk about 3 miles every day, weather permitting. Tread mills and gyms don’t work for me. I need to be surrounded by nature. Something beautiful I can focus on.
2.Paintings full of blues,and yellows, earth tones. For relaxing the objects in the paintings aren’t important, it’s the colors. I can enjoy paintings that are nothing but one color. Blue is a color that makes me feel happy, relaxed.
When I am in New York of my favorite places to relax is a room in the Museum of Modern Art. On the surrounding walls are a series of paintings of water lilies by Monet. I find my self transport to that pond of lilies. The tension and stress just melts away.
3.Comic Strips. Reading the comics and getting a good laugh is an essential part of my morning.
4. Steam bath and Massage I haven’t done this in awhile but the steam cleanses my body and a good massage relaxes my muscles.
5.I am not sure if it’s appropriate to post here Bill but you did ask.
Sharing my mind and body with a female friend or lover is another great way release tension. Just holding hands with something you love works as well.
Bill, come stai?
In exactly one week, I will be in Rome, Italy.
I wish I could take a year off work and do nothing but read, read, read. I’ve been reading about physics, the human mind/brain, and language. And sci-fi.
If you don’t mind my asking, what genre of books have you gotten into lately?
Let’s see what else:
very, very bad guitar playing and piano, too
Designing new scripts and writing systems
hiking (when I can)

I got the Frankie Goes to Hollywood joke.
That’s very risqué for such a wholesome blog, O.o hahahaha.
I’ve got to agree with Robert. Having four kids certainly keeps me busy.
Of course Thursday night is supposed to be “game night”. Not that we manage it often.
When they do get to bed and leave us (The Hildy and I) an hour or two before exhaustion claims us we tend to talk. Actually The Hildy tends to talk and I get to listen. She has a horrible job and likes to off load.
At other times I read. I read a lot as a matter of fact.
What I miss doing to relax is to paint. Iused to spend days just painting but I’ve barely touched a brush since becoming a parent.
Oh and I remember Frankie Goes To Hollywood quite well. A teenage hoverFrog was even a member of the fan club.
All this talk of food has reminded me of another fun thing that we do as a family. Each Sunday we get to try a meal from a different part of the world. We’ve had Indian, Chinese, traditional English, Italian, and Russian. Of course these are approximations to the genuine article and vegetarian versions to boot but it’s a fun family activity.
That’s why I must steal all your best recipes. I simply must have them.
Bill, don’t forget that I’m also Vince Old… I mean Vince Young. Oh yeah, and you are also Reggie Bush and Terrell Owens!
@Polly…
We sound a lot alike. Italy, eh? I’m jealous. I’m dying to go!
@hov…
Awesome idea!!
@Paul…
But we both know they’ll never be anything as cool as the “Cavalini Brothers”

Cavalini to Cavalini, to Cavalini back to Cavalini… SCORES!!!
Hey Hover, My husband is Norwegian, and we love to make Lefsa. It’s fun for the kids too, once it’s made you can put different goodies in the middle and roll them up like a crepe to eat. We usually use butter, cinnamon and sugar….Have fun!
INGREDIENTS
18 baking potatoes, scrubbed
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
DIRECTIONS:
Peel potatoes and place them in a large pot with a large amount of water. Bring water to a boil, and let the potatoes boil until soft. Drain and mash well.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 8 cups mashed potatoes, cream, butter, salt, and sugar. Cover potatoes and refrigerate over night.
Mix flour into the mashed potatoes and roll the mixture into balls about the size of tennis balls, or smaller depending on preference. Keep balls of dough on plate in the refrigerator.
Taking one ball out of the refrigerator at a time, roll dough balls out on a floured board. To keep the dough from sticking while rolling it out, it helps to have a rolling pin with a cotton rolling pin covers.
Fry the lefsa in a grill or in an iron skillet at very high heat. If lefsa brown too much, turn the heat down. After cooking each piece of lefsa place on a dishtowel. Fold towel over lefsa to keep warm. Stack lefsa on top of each other and keep covered to keep from drying out.
