Pssst…Bill, I think you missed some of the originator’s rules (if you care):

When I was a wee little Cub Scout all those years ago…
There was an anecdote that the Cub Master (my Dad) would regale the audience at the pack meetings with:
“A small boy was asked what faith was. His response was this: Faith is like flipping on a light switch and knowing the light will turn on.”
This story always had the adults in the audience go: “Awwwwwwww!”
But, even as a small boy myself at the time, I picked this little quip apart in my head.
“What if the bulb’s filament was broken?”
“What if the fuse was blown?”
“What if some rat chewed through one of the wires in the wall?
Faith alone was not a guarantor of that light turning on!!
Would this destroy this little boy’s whole belief system?
I guess he’d better learn a little bit about electricity in case God wasn’t there to do it for him! :d
Thusly, the Electrical Engineer who now types this is born!!
Robert
Heh…oops!
Benjamin already said it’s an oxymoron…you need to think of something else to say
Simple faith…
Its the faith of a child. Its simple. Jesus came, saw, and conquered with His bloodshed. Through Him we can be saved (eternal life) and forgiven.
Its that simple. No indepth mysteries of biblical contraversy on specific wording or if Mary Mag was JC’s girl. Nope.
Its just having faith in the simple truth.
No need for complicating it.
We can’t even agree on what faith is let alone ’simple’ faith.
I agree with Bill and Gretch though. Simple faith is like that of a child before it is corrupted by vicious fact and the realities of a harsh world. How anyone hangs on to it as they go through life escapes me.
I’d imagine that such faith would be shed along with belief in the Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas. Seeing that it isn’t has made me consider that it might have more to it. Perhaps it’s because we ask for miracles from the Tooth Fairy (who changes old teeth for money) and Santa (who magically brings gifts on Christmas Eve) as children but learn that our parents actually perform these ‘miracles’. Whereas faith in the divine is less refutable given the vagaries of requested miracles.
hoverFrog, check out Laura’s comment about faith on my blog (she’s an atheist btw).

Eek! Faith in humanity? Now there’s a leap.
“What is simple faith?”
I take the word faith to included none religious beliefs.
I can’t think of a “simple” answer but I can think of the simple question.
What is the least that you require to have faith in something?
My guess is that the least I require is that “it” helps me survive. If it improves the quality of my life my faith is reinforced.
I have faith in my self. I needed this faith to work through the problems I have encountered in life.
I believe in evolution. That our brains will continue to mutate. Those mutations that result in improving our survivability will be pasted on to future generations.
Human societies will continue to evolve. Natural selection will result in more cooperative societies surviving and more violent societies failing.
