The Church Of Oprah
Christians love disliking Oprah. She’s famous for telling her multi-million person audience that there “can’t possibly be only one way to God.”
A recent Youtube video has hit the Internet and taken it by storm. In this video, Oprah is accused of leading the largest church or cult in the world. Check out the video here.
I myself am not an Oprah fan. In my opinion, this video isn’t way off. She has an enormous following and she’s leading people astray. Like it or not, the bible warns us time after time again about these false leaders. I’m not about to lose any sleep over Oprah or her “cult,” though.

I’ve already received the email twice from an aunt on both sides of my family. Here’s the text of one of the emails
If you’ve seen Jesus Camp it opens with a church program, with kids dancing in army outfits and that kind of thing. The relative who sent me this *runs* those programs at her church.
She conned us into going by telling us my cousin (about my kids age) was having a dance recital. The images of a bloody Jesus on the cross kept flashing on the screen behind the stage. It scared the Jesus right out of my kids. There is nothing like having the image of tortured man flashed onto a screen and having your 8-year-old look at you with the “please tell me I’m safe and then explain to me what I just saw” look on his face.
Of her latest program that is now accosting the air waves I can only say this:
It’s called “Oprah’s Big Give”, perhaps they should have named it “Oprah’s Big Head”!
Seriously, should we all be so impressed that a woman who is worth billions at last check is giving away a few million? Something akin to you or I throwing a couple of quarters at a homeless person? Give me a freakin’ break!
This nothing more than Oprah already adding to her cult following of ’sheeple’. This a big stroke fest to Oprah’s ego which is increasing faster than her waistline.
We are talking about a woman who extolled the virtues of a book that SERIOUSLY makes the argument that if you wish hard enough you can get anything you want! this is done with out a lick of a humor or reason. And the author has the temerity to call upon Quantum Mechanics as proof of her supposition!
It’s lunacy!
But before you start feeling too good about your own position there Bill, I’d remind you that many in your doctrinal tradition would have be believe in a talking snake and of literal worldwide floods for which there is NO compelling evidence.
Sorry if I seem blunt but i recently wasted 90 minutes of my life watching Ben Stein LIE and OBFUSCATE and I’m in no mood for drivel of any kind secular or otherwise.
R.
Oh, puhlease. I’m no fan of Oprah either. But “leading people astray”? Give me a break.
She has pulled herself up from poverty into a position of power and influence and she does her best to help as many people as she can. She is a wonderful role model.
Way to slink in some anti-Obama propaganda…
Seriously? Come on, Sara…
Not *you* personally Bill. The video. They tag it in on at the end there. It’s all about how Oprah is leading the people astray then they prop up the Oprah, Obama, and the Occult book as though saying, “Oprah stands for everything that is going wrong with spirituality in America and she endorses Obama! That can’t be good!”
it always amuses me when one religion calls another a “cult”. just b/c someone isn’t a christian doesn’t make them a bad person automatically. the leading astray sounds pretty silly in my opinion. I’m not a big fan of new age stuff either, but at least she’s helping people. maybe some people should take a page from that.
Like it or not, the bible warns us time after time again about these false leaders. I’m not about to lose any sleep over Oprah or her “cult,” though.
So…where exactly does the Bible warn about Oprah and why aren’t you losing sleep over her even though it does warn about her?
Just so I’m clear
Hi Helen!
Here’s a page full of verses on false prophets. Here’s another one.
2 Peter says it well.
Obviously the bible doesn’t refer to “Oprah” by name
Maybe I should be losing sleep, I don’t know.
What are your 2 cents? I ask cuz you know this stuff better than I do (even if you don’t believe it anymore).
Maria:
I’m afraid I can disagree with you more.
Your are correct. Just becuase someone isn’t a Christian, it doesn’t make them a ‘bad’ person. I would also say that just because someone is in ‘cult’ it doesn’t mean they are a ‘bad’ person either, but just because someone calls themselves a Christian, it doesn’t mean that they are a Christian!
Oprah & Friends have been working hard since the launch of their website and satellite radio program to ‘break down’ the historical view of what it means to be a follower of Christ, or a Christian.
So, in my opinion, anyone who does that is leading people astray.
Here’s an example of what I mean:
“There can’t possibly be one way…”
or
“Does God care about your heart, or if you call his son Jesus?
- A response to someone who asked about Jesus.
This type of “theology” is not Christian, and is not based on the Bible, and yet Oprah & Friends are trying to pass this off as a ‘new’ understanding of the Bible and Christianity…
In fact Maryanne Williamson (A course in miracles) which is a book promoted by Oprah and a syndicated show on Oprah’s satellite radio program says the following about the life, death, and Gospel of Jesus Christ:
If this isn’t misleading to the historical view of Christianity, then what would you consider it?
Please do tell.
For His Glory,
Jason

How does one go about not leading or being led astray?
Hi Bill!
Thanks for the link to the page about false prophets
Maybe I should be losing sleep, I don’t know.
Well, since we’re Biblical I’d say not because “[God] grants sleep to those he loves” (Psalm 127:2).
What are your 2 cents? I ask cuz you know this stuff better than I do (even if you don’t believe it anymore).
I guess that’s fair - I asked you, now you’re asking me back…
Ummm…well, whatever I believe I know I don’t believe people are going to go to hell just because of Oprah.
So I’m not worried about that.
I think when Christians get involved this way the main effect of their involvement is to add to the reasons the rest of the world have for thinking Christians suck.
So on the whole I think Christians lose more than they gain from behaving the way they do on this video and then making a video of the way they behave and putting it on youtube showing they’re proud of it.
This is just my opinion…
It’s Christians like the people who made that video that give all Christians a bad name.
Some reasons why people think Christians suck (as Helen succinctly put above):
1) Christianity is the “only way” and nothing else could even possibly be right, BECAUSE THE BIBLE SAYS SO. Get over yourselves - just because you’re ignorant enough to live by a 2000 year old novel doesn’t give you the right to impose its “rules” on other people. And guess what? The Koran also tells Muslims that it’s the word of Allah. And you wonder why so many people die just because of religious differences. Everyone has to be the only “right” one. Pathetic.
2) Christianity is “salvation”. These judgmental arrogant fundamentalists have no awareness that by extolling the “virtues” of Christianity and spreading scaremongering stories of what would happen to you if you weren’t “saved”, they’re infringing everyone else’s freedom of religion - which includes the freedom not to hear about stupid stories of damnation. Worst of all, the whole time these Christians think they’re doing the right thing.
3) The Bible is “FACT”. As far as I’m concerned, if you want to live by the Bible, go ahead - just don’t pick and choose passages that you like for your own convenience. Eaten any pork or shellfish lately? You’ve SINNED. Don’t even try to tell me that you don’t infringe any of the ridiculous rules laid out in Leviticus. If you can’t live by the Bible’s “teachings”, guess what? You can’t judge other people by them either.
And as for Jason refuting “there can’t possibly be one way” - hate to break it to you, but if there was only “one way” then there wouldn’t be so many denominations of Christianity. Obviously even “Christians” can’t agree on one set of values and standards. I don’t even need to get into the history of Catholicism vs Protestantism, or The Great Schism.
To all religious zealots: open your narrow minds and stop judging others based on your very limited knowledge of what’s right and wrong. NOBODY can prove whether God exists or not, and we live in the modern world where rationality and scientific proof is absolute fact. Just because you believe God exists does not make it fact.
Use your brains a little bit.
