when christians actions turn people away from god
I say:
His heart breaks. This happens way too often, doesn’t it? Keep in mind, though, that the word ‘Christian’ is NOT synonymous with the word ‘perfect.’

Christianity seems to have survived 2000 years of Christian’s actions. I believe that it has done this by building churches that fit within the niche of society that wants it. Historically this may have been by supporting the current king who was in fashion or resisting that ruler and serving the people, sometimes both at the same time. In the modern era we see churches forming that are liberal and accepting of diverse groups that include minority races, homosexuals and people from all economic classes. Others are fundamental to (what I see as) insane levels. Each church is made up of Christians who fill a niche.
There just isn’t a niche for atheists though and one church that turns people away tars all the other churches with the same brush. Have you heard the story of Mohandas Gandhi as a young man who went to explore Christianity while he was in South Africa? He was turned away by a white man who rejected him on his skin colour. He never got to explore Christianity. One racist turned a great man and a world influence away from your god forever. Imagine what could have happened if he’d decided to visit an open Christian church in England or a liberal church in Africa instead?
I don’t know if the story is true or not but it is certainly believable. Even as an atheist I find it incredibly sad that human beings are unable to take the positive lessons of Christianity and apply them in life. How difficult really is the Golden Rule to apply?
